May 4, 2019 in Actions Sud by ODDY-C

The project to improve the conditions of access to water, hygiene and sanitation in schools in the municipality of Isare started in May 2018 and ended in October 2018 with funding from ‘Aliaxis and an additional equity from ODDYC (thanks again to our generous donors). The project was implemented with our local partner, Association for a Better Future (ASSAM). The Régie Communale d’Isare has also been involved in the rehabilitation of the Isare-Muberere drinking water supply, which is in charge of its management and maintenance.

Access to drinking water in Nyarumpongo-Muberere is improved

Rehabilitation of catchments to increase water flow.

The rehabilitation and protection of the catchments have allowed to add water from 4 sources to the network with a flow of 4 l / s and to feed the network to the reservoir of the school.

Rehabilitation of the network

Rehabilitation of the departure chamber and replacement of the main pipe on 500m. Construction of 3 standpipes: a standpipe was set up for the population around the start room to avoid connections directly on the network and increase the flow downstream. Another was built at the village level to unclog the market. Rehabilitation of a 10m³ reservoir for the 3 primary schools This reservoir makes it possible to continue to supply schools in case of breakdown or maintenance of the network. It had many leaks, it was completely sealed.

Connection to the hydraulic network

The activities concerning the hydraulic part were carried out by the technical branch of the communal water authority via the communal fountain-maker and his team. All connections for connection to the tank have been successfully completed. Today, the 3 schools are supplied with drinking water.

The hygiene and sanitation conditions in Nyarumpongo-Muberere and surrounding areas are improved

School campaigns to raise awareness of hygiene and sanitation This component is very important if we aim at the sustainability of the infrastructures built and their appropriation by the users. He has involved the community health worker, carrying messages related to health and hygiene in his community and the communal water authority that manages the network. – a community health promotion officer has revitalized and reorganized the water point management committees of the network. – hygiene and sanitation awareness-raising actions took place at the school (games, contests, skits, …) with the students who were able to pass on the messages received in their homes.
